EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) was formulated in the 1980s by Gary Craig, a Stanford engineer who had studied Thought Field Therapy (TFT) with Roger Callaghan. TFT was complex and could only be used by practitioners and Gary felt that a simpler version could be devised so that the system could be used simply and easily by anyone at any time. EFT was thus born and Gary has devoted years to ensuring the widespread use of this simple technique. Gary’s tutorials are still easily obtainable and free to anyone to learn and use. (www.emofree.com) All human beings have an ‘energy’ body. To function properly our bodies must allow energy to flow freely into, through and out. Eastern medicine has worked on this premise for thousands of years using practices such as acupuncture to clear energy blockages which lead to dis-ease of the body. When the blockages are cleared, a person starts to feel differently, better and more energised. Emotions change, thoughts change and this will influence how you feel and the effect on your body. EFT is known as needle-less acupuncture, the system being similar where one stimulates meridian points on the body but using a tapping motion with the fingers instead of inserting needles. You can now learn this technique from the internet, from a book or visit a practitioner who will teach you the technique and from thereon you will be your own practitioner. If deep emotional trauma such as PTSD is involved it is recommended that you sign up with a certified practitioner who will be qualified to identify the issues involved and ensure that each aspect is dealt with effectively. EFT does not purport to ‘cure’ anything, we can only say ‘try it on everything’ as what it does is release blockages in the energy system which may have an impact on one’s health and experience. As an EFT practitioner, I can only say that the technique appears so work well for so many things. And the effect is usually permanent. Pain has dissolved where the underlying issues have been acknowledged and addressed, spider and flying phobias have disappeared. Working with EFT is a joint exploration for both client and practitioner each time anew. The body’s innate intelligence seemingly deciding what is best dealt with at that particular time. One very comforting aspect of this technique is that it is not necessary for the patient to disclose what the issue is when they are dealing with a traumatic situation and therefore any discomfort or perceived embarrassment can be minimised. Children can use a simplified form of the tapping process and this can help with the stresses of growing up, schools, friends, parents! My belief is that if every child used this technique there would eventually be a lot less stressed adults. I use this technique myself daily and thoroughly recommend this practice. It helps to keep me calm and definitely reduces the load of an increasingly hectic and stressful modern lifestyle.
