We are made up of physical and spiritual energy, both when nurtured can be used for healing ourselves. Physically we heal from cuts and breaks better when we are well nourished and rested and often struggle more to recover from illness when we are run down or as we age, as our reserves of vitamins minerals and other heal and repair fundamentals are low. As someone who works with the physical body, I'm going to focus on physical energy for physical healing. As is often the case this comes back to two basic components, sleep and nutrition. Healing is a process of chemical reactions that don't happen correctly if the right triggers aren't there, and which, for the most part, happen during the deep cycle sleep state. I have spoken a great deal about the importance of sleep in my two previous articles, so check out Jan and Feb for top sleep tips and self-care advice. I like to think of time spent sleeping as important maintenance and repair time, for both our mental and physical healing. I’m sure we have all experienced the technology re-boot trick to solve minor faults or issues with how a device is functioning; we turn it off, let it rest for a few minutes and then turn it back on again. More often than not this solves minor faults, so if u feel like your system is faulty and needs a re-set get some rest and see how much better you feel afterwards. It's not all about fixing cuts and bruises, if you are working out hard you need the right nutrition AND enough sleep to repair torn muscle fibres and grow bigger muscles. If you’re not getting the rest & nutrition needed it will take you longer to heal and repair physical and mental blips and they may escalate into bigger problems. I witnessed close hand the disastrous effect a lack of healing sleep can have on mental health when a family member developed psychosis after a change in his medication left him unable to sleep. Don't forget sleep disturbance is an effective interrogation tool still commonly used to make people crack under pressure. A good diet is essential to harnessing your ability to heal, but these days it is one that is becoming harder to maintain as toxic, over processed and chemical foods often seem to be all there is on offer in many places. Even if you try to eat well and include lots of veg and healthy options, they often do not contain the nutrients that traditionally grown veg once did. The soil they are grown in is so depleted of nutrients and they grow only when forced with artificial fertilisers & growth agents, and are kept "healthy" and disease free with nutrient depleting pesticides. The startling rise in obesity diabetes and cancers over the past 50 years runs parallel with the rise in over processed and pesticide filled foods. The supermarkets price wars have disguised the real cost of real food. We can now spend less than ever to feed ourselves on cheap factory farmed meats, nutrient negative veg and sugar bulked sauces. While real food seems to be becoming increasingly out of reach of the less affluent, and the preserve of independent shop goers and artisan food market aficionados. Do we value designer clothes or flat screen TVs more than our own health & healing potential? As my man's wise mother, a very healthy active 80-year-old often says, If you need to spend less there are always other things you can cut back on, but not quality food. And you don't argue with La Madre. 😋 So, choose what you eat wisely, sleep well and look forward to a healthier happy life. For a healthier happier you! Fay
