Yes the word “lunatic” goes back all those hundreds of years to the Roman Goddess of the Moon, Luna. It refers to the strange behaviour the effect of the energy of the full moon can have on people. Years of scientific study has yet to come up with any solid evidence that the draw of the full moon on the water we have in our bodies (yes men too!) can make us cranky, argumentative, and in extreme cases unreasonably violent…hence “lunatics”. However, Police Inspectors, Security companies, school teachers would all tell you that the week running up to, and on the night of, full moon people’s behaviour definitely takes on a dark side. Extra police staff are put on the streets, more doormen are placed on late night establishments and school teachers can be seen grabbing the rescue remedy before heading out into the playground where the “lunatics have taken over the asylum!”. But it’s not just full moon that affects our moods and energies, the whole lunar cycle has a profound effect on the way our energy works throughout the month, 29 and a half days to be specific. ‘The moon cycles’ is really about the relationship between the moon and the sun, after all it’s the energy and light from the sun that gives us the sight of our moon in the sky. When we understand these cycles we can use them to our best advantage by arranging our month around them. Cycles of the moon The cycle starts with New Moon; the moon is positioned between the sun and Earth. From Earth, the sun and moon appear to be in the same part of the sky and will rise and set together. The side of the moon that receives the sun's light is facing away from Earth, so no moon is visible to us on Earth's surface. New Moon represents new beginnings, the birth of new ideas, plant those metaphorical seeds for new plans, new ideas and the start of new adventures. I always hold my monthly workshops on the week of new moon, new beginnings for my students to learn and move forward with positive energy, Waxing Crescent approx... 3.5 days after new moon.
